When the kids first mentioned going to watch Star Wars, I was excited. I think I’ve watched practically every Star Wars movie that was ever made.

I was excited about seeing Hans Solo and Chewbacca and Princess Leia again. So you can understand why my heart sank when my kids told me this Star Wars is an animated movie.

So what to do? Of course, we’re going (we got free tickets!) even if I have to swallow my disappointment . Even up till the first scene, I was still expecting that this would be an animated version of the old familiar Star Wars.

Actually it’s not. Some of the old characters are still there, the not so important ones, like Jedi, Obiwan Kenobi and the 2 loveable robots, R2D2 and C3PO.

Anakin (er, where’s Luke?) Skywalker takes on a padawan (aka apprentice), by the name of Ahsoka Tano, at the height of the Clone Wars.

The two are called upon to rescue Jabba the Hutt’s son, Huttlett, or Stinko who describes what he smells like, who was kidnapped by Lord Dooku.

I’m not quite sure what to make of the movie but I enjoyed the popcorn and hotdog .

The occasional animated cartoon movie can be incredibly good for the soul. I’m so glad we didn’t miss the awesomeness of Kung Fu Panda.

Well, to start with, Po is such a lovable little panda I just feel like tapping his tummy. Well, he’s not exactly little, in fact, he’s really way too fat for those deft kung fu moves.

But nothing can stop him from pursuing his dream of becoming a legendary warrior though his father (not sure how a drake can be the father of a panda but I guess that’s just a minor technicality) harbors high hopes of his taking over the family’s noodle business.

This isn’t just a movie about kung fu. There’s a bigger, underlying message that although we may blame our failures on the absence of that all-empowering ‘secret ingredient’, there really is no secret ingredient to success.

That’s all I’m going to tell you. Go catch some of that Kung Fu Panda awesomeness yourself. After all, there is no charge for awesomeness . A simple plot with a powerful message. Ya gonna love it.

Though I was a big fan of the Incredible Hulk series starring Bill Bixby, I really wasn’t sure I wanted to watch the movie remake of it.

But we got free tickets to the Incredible Hulk so what the heck? let’s go!

Dr Bruce Banner (Edward Banner), while seeking to become normal again by getting rid of the raging beast inside him, faces off with Blonsky (Tim Roth) who chooses to become a bigger, uglier version of the Incredible Hulk.

Okay, first off, I have to say I really prefer Lou Ferrigno as the Hulk and not the ugly green mass of rippling sinews in this movie. Now that I’ve gotten that out of the way, let me just say I adore the Banner (Edward Norton) in this movie.

Norton’s portrayal of a man with a reluctant beast inside of him really touched a soft spot in me. Hopeless romantic that I am, I was swept away by the beautiful love story he has with Dr Elizabeth Ross (Liv Tyler).

Loved every minute of the movie except for the parts where the two monsters fought. I had my eyes closed because I couldn’t bear to look at how disgusting the Abomination is, yuck! But hey, The Incredible Hulk is definitely a great movie for big kids and little ones too .

Of course I had no idea who Iron Man was. I’ve only heard of Superman, Spider Man, Bionic Man, Ultra Man,.. but Iron Man? Who is that?

Oh, he’s a superhero from the Marvel Comics, mom, my kids tell me. And they wanted to see the movie. so. much. I didn’t! But I’m glad I let them convince me to go.

The movie starts out with Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr) being caught in an unfortunate situation out in a desert war zone that leaves him with the revelation that the weapons he’s built to protect his country may indeed be used to attack it instead.

Back home, he tries to convince his family friend and partner, Obadiah (Jeff Bridges) about taking up corporate responsibility to turn things around. Like all superheros, he has a trusted sidekick who sticks with him through thick and thin.

Speaking of thin, Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) is gorgeously slim and exudes a beauty I’ve never quite noticed before. She used to strike me as a little too thin but she looks really good in this movie.

Have you watched Iron Man yet? If not, you should go watch it. I recommend it. It’s a great action flick without getting too much into special effects and nothing else. It was also brilliant of the producers to adapt this comic classic to a modern and very relevant setting.

Today we bought a couple of fishes from a fish stall along the highway. There was nothing special about the fish except that they were flown fresh from some island everyday. A friend recommended the stall to us so we thought we’d try it out.

When we brought the fish into the house, it immediately stank up the whole house. Let me tell you, the smell was sickly and utterly horrific – almost nauseating.

We fried the fish until they looked black and crispy for dinner. The fish turned out to be tasteless and full of bones.

And for the price we paid for a few smelly and yucky fishes? Uh, not such a good deal.

And guess what?

The pieces of chicken were sour or should I say, went bad. We told the waiter and he took our plate of chicken into the kitchen. He asked if we wanted a refund of the chicken curry but we had already finished eating.

This is the first time I’m watching a Shrek movie. We’ve never been to one but I’m guessing the rest of the gang might’ve watched it on DVD or snippets of it somewhere.

Brunch turned out to be a long but fast-moving line of folks to the concessions counter where they were dishing out 1901 hotdogs, popcorn and a choice of drinks. Inside the cinema, there was plenty of time to eat before the movie started.

For poor Shutter.bug, our strapping young man, one hotdog was really not enough. He kept dipping into our popcorn and guzzling our drinks to make up.

Thankfully, they passed around extra food that was left over after the lines ended. We got extra portions of fishballs and more popcorn.

I have to confess I went in completely clueless, no idea what the movie was going to be about. As it turned out, I wasn’t overly impressed. It’s a good movie for younger kids, I guess. But to a mom and a brood of teens, it’s a tad childish.

Shrek 3 was your regular fairytale made from a satirical angle, I guess, judging by the way Snow White, Cinderella and all these other Disney princesses were arguing and behaving in less than lady-like ways.

You know how we have these porcelain perceptions about fairytale princesses. Shrek 3 shatters that image of soft-spoken genteel beauties that we hold so dear. I’m not sure what it could do to the younger kids. I kinda would’ve like for them to hold on to that magic just a little longer, you know .

We were thrilled that an invitation to a pre-movie cocktail party came with our tickets. This came as a pleasant surprise to us.

Happily we showed up an hour before the movie and were led straight to the cocktails. Mmm, sweet! This is the life, we chirped!

In the cinema, we found a bag of popcorn and a Coke on each seat. Man, they were really pampering us. Didn’t we just stuff ourselves out there, and you’re offering us more food?

Okay, on with the movie. With all that excitement leading up to the release of Pirates 3, I’m glad this sequel turned out to be what we had hoped. We were completely absorbed.

My main complaint is that there was too much of Captain Barbosa and too little of Jack Sparrow. We love Johnny Depp and his endearing effeminate moves. I really wish they’d worked in more of him.

By the way, I noticed Captain Sparrow’s filty black teeth seemed to have turned a pearly white. I wonder if that was done on purpose, or if the keygrip was sleeping on the job.

Orlando Bloom was, as usual, the reason I was swooning so much. He’s gotten more macho since Pirates 1. Kiera Knightley, on the other hand, could use a couple more burgers though. She’s gotten way too skinny.

But hey, the special effects were great and so was the movie. Kept us on the edge of our seats without going overboard (oops!). We really enjoyed it and couldn’t stop talking about it all night. I’m guessing we’ll be talking about it till the next sequel.

Oh, we stayed back just to watch the happy ending that came after the credits. Almost everyone else had left the cinema. They didn’t know about that last bit, Will Turner’s homecoming. We knew, so we just hung back and waited. Well worth the wait .

So like total idiots, we got in line and bought ourselves 2 large boxes of popcorn, 2 large cokes and two 1901 hotdogs.

On the way in, we noticed the counter where they were dishing out boxes of free popcorn and drinks. Too late, we’d bought ours. But being the pigs we are, we decided to grab the freebies anyways.

So there we were, stuffing ourselves silly on six boxes of popcorn. It was a good thing we were pretty hungry. So the popcorn and hotdogs were gone in a flash .

The movie was great. The plot was nice and straightforward, nothing too complicated. I’m happier knowing MJ knows that Peter Parker is Spiderman. I just wish he had been a little more sensitive to what she was going through.

I liked the many endearing scenes of friendship in the movie like those between Peter and Harry Osborne, MJ and Harry and all three of them.

I also liked that the Sandman wasn’t entirely evil and that he at least had a heart. Thankfully he didn’t resemble Doc Ock in Spiderman 2. That guy irritated the heck out of me with those multiple thrashing arms and that thumping crab walk of his.

So yeah, Spiderman 3 is entirely watchable. I think it’s the best of the 3 parts although the girls would disagree. They say Spiderman 1 was the best.

Today, we watched Casino Royale, the 21st James Bond 007 film. Starring Daniel Craig as the new James Bond.

Everyone who watched it must be thinking, “this movie is so exciting…” and so on. But at the same time, they must be thinking, “it was exciting but why is there something bugging me about this show?”.

Reasons why Casino Royale is weird :

James Bond doesn’t drive a Ford. He should drive a cool car with lots of gadgets.

When Vesper Lynd was drowning, he should have tried to save her. Instead he shook the bars and watched her drown.

The Bond girl isn’t supposed to die because they don’t.

James Bond doesn’t just resign from his job just to go out with the Bond girl.

All James Bonds like expensive clothes, cars, drinks and other cool stuff. But this James Bond asked why his coat was tailored. Does that mean he likes recycled clothes?

James Bond doesn’t scold the Bond girl and treat her roughly.

He isn’t supposed to chase bad guys everywhere and fight with his hands and legs, he is supposed to use his gadgets.

He looks as if he’s gonna teach cooking lessons because he looks too kind and smiley.

Where is the James Bond theme song? Or did they change it to some weird song with drums or something which sounded like a plain old song.

The movie is advertising brands such as Sony Ericcson and a few more.

There might be a few more weird parts (if there’s anymore). If you happen to watch this show in the cinema or on TV (if there is), then watch out for them.
