Whither November weather?

Quite honestly, the weather these days isn’t much good for being outside. It’s rainy, stormy and sunny at the wrong time.

This morning, on the way to my gym, I noticed how hazy it was in the distance. I’m just glad I don’t have to be outdoors breathing in all that dust. Is this global warming? Because I can’t remember November weather being this gloomy.

The weather is hot, then cold, then very hot again and now I’ve got a scratchy throat from that plus a crazy weekend at a wedding gobbling lots of good food. Luckily most of our time was spent indoors. One minute it was pouring cats and dogs, and another, the heat singed our skin. How did your weekend go?

I just happened to glance at my calendar and noticed Valentine’s Day is just a month away. Whoa! Where did the time go, it was just New Year’s yesterday, no?

Anyhow, I love this whole idea of Valentine’s Day and heart shapes everywhere and people who would think up all sorts of elaborate gifts and ideas to impress their loved ones. Yep, I love watching soppy love stories with happy endings, don’t you?

I’ve heard of some guy who took out a cash advance to put up his wedding proposal on a billboard and buy 1000 roses and a diamond ring to propose to his girlfriend . No shame to that at all considering the state of the economy now, a little help never hurt!

OMG, I think it’s the most romantic thing ever! I can only imagine the look on her face when she drives by that billboard and sees their photo and his proposal up there! It’s the kind of stuff that only happens in movies, I think but to have it played out in real life is just too cool!

So what are your plans for Valentine’s Day? Will it be the same old bouquet of flowers, box of chocolates or have you got a big, crazy surprise up your sleeve?

I recently got an email from a reader, Karen who asks the following question (unedited):

Well my 14th birthday is coming up and I want to do something with all 9 of my friends that doesn’t cost my mum much. Im not aloud a sleepover because their are to many of us and the house is to small but she also doesn’t want everyone coming back because we would be to noisy and my room isnt big enough. I wanted a girly day out but a dont know what to do. I have searched and searched around for a beautician to come and pamper us or to go to a salon but its too much money. Have you any ideas what I could do for my birthday for a girly day?

to a pool or beach party – it won’t cost a lot if you bring your own picnic basket
to spend the day at the mall trying on clothes at the store

Happy April Fool’s Day! You know, this used to be my favorite day back when I was in school. I’m a bit too old for it now though I’d still love to fool someone if I had a chance. Well, my kids are certainly having fun giving their friends the runaround. Did you play any pranks on anyone today? Or did you get fooled yourself ?

neither dragon nor lion

On the last day of Chinese New Year, we happened to be out at an exclusive club and thought since we were there, we would catch their lion dance. We love lion dances and we only get to watch them once a year.

They had a dragon dance while we were eating dinner. We didn’t catch that because it would be rude to leave our hosts while we all rushed out to watch .

By the time we finished dinner though, we discovered the lion dances would only start in one hour. Since there was nothing much to do at the club, one hour would indeed be a long wait. So we left.

This has been a quiet Chinese New Year for me. Has it been for you too? On the one hand, I hear many people are scaling down their celebrations, preferring to go out less and so spend less.

On the other hand, I know of someone who’s taken her entire family to Japan for a holiday and of others who are dining out every single night. Do you have any idea how Chinese restaurants always use this festive season to double up their food prices?
