finding peace and happiness
There’s no way that I can repeat what Ajahn Brahm said so beautifully in his talk about “finding the path to peace and happiness”.
But I’ll try to recap the gist of what he said here because I think there are lessons here to be learnt.
Ajahn Brahm based his talk on the Buddhist principle of the 4 Noble Truths. Many people think that they have to be successful to be happy. So they say things like “oh, when I have enough money to buy a big house, then I’ll be happy”.
But according to Ajahn Brahm, you have to first be happy and then success will follow. And how can you happy? Be more forgiving, leave bad memories of the past behind and do not keep dwelling on them. If you wrap yourself in the past, you’ll never move forward and you can never make yourself happy.
And how do we find peace? By leaving your failures behind and remembering your successes. By doing this, you cultivate peace with yourself, and only when you’re at peace with yourself can you be at peace with others.
