angry seas

It’s a good thing we’re back here. A freak storm hit Penang yesterday bringing on huge waves, whipping rains and destruction to property. Good thing no one was hurt. Gosh, to think we stayed at a beachfront hotel too where we could literally reach out and touch the sea!
After the tsunami of 2004, it’s hard to dissociate the word “ocean” from its negative connotation. I think such disasters will always linger in the backs of our minds no matter how we try to think on the brighter side.
You know, I spent long moments looking out to sea from my hotel room, and it’s all a perfectly beautiful and still sheet of water. Fishermen in boats are zipping quietly about their day’s catch. In the distance, ships are plying gracefully back and forth.
Everything looks so peaceful I never get tired of getting lost in the beauty. It’s almost impossible to think of this calm as ever being destructive.
When I read it in the news today, it all seemed unreal. Like it could never have happened. Yet the pictures prove it all. Even the seas get angry sometimes.
