drivers from hell

I started this year saying I was going to stop complaining and swearing at the bad attitudes of other road users. I try not to complain but with the kind of inconsiderate road users out there, it’s next to impossible.

Just driving down the street is a hazard these days. There are cars that don’t stop at T-junctions. They just shoot out without even so much a glance to see if anyone’s coming up the road. They don’t stop. They expect YOU to stop. Since when have main street traffic been expected to stop for side road traffic?!!

The school scene is the classic everyday scenario of lawlessness. People stop anywhere they please, some right smack in the middle of the road as they wait for their primary school kids to stumble out with their two-ton bags, open the car door, and heave the bags in themselves. The poor kid while mama happily sits in air-conditioned comfort waiting AND keeping everyone else behind her waiting as well!!

Other parents just park their cars wherever they happen to be at and take a Sunday stroll in search of their kids. And wherever could be the middle of the road, obstructing cars trying to get out or get past.

Typically when a two-lane road becomes a single lane road, other road users become pretty upset and start trying to squeeze ahead of oncoming traffic. What this does, and this is not something many of the peabrains out there can figure out, is it creates a dead lock. Meaning neither side can move forward, and neither side will reverse to let the other through.

I’ve had my side mirror nicked many times because some peabrains insists on forcing their way through instead of waiting for me to come clear. This irritates me almost as much as when my side mirror gets nicked by some motorcyclist who insists on squeezing past me although it’s pretty obvious he really can’t make it!!

Then there are the kids on bicycles doing stunts on their way home from school. Some walk or cycle three or four breadthwise while joking, laughing and pushing each other which makes it really difficult for cars to avoid them.

Why parents don’t teach their children or reprimand them for putting their lives (not to mention ours!) in danger is something beyond me! I happen to remember when I was in school, we were taught to always walk or cycle in single file. I really wonder if that sort of thing is still being taught in school.

Being a mom with kids in the car has made me a super careful driver. My kids have been strapped in since they were born. I always give way. My motto has always been this: If you’re in a hurry, I’ll move aside so you can go ahead, just leave me out of your accident.
