breakfast for a song

We went to Ikea for their fantastic RM2 breakfast offer. You can select from 3 options: nasi lemak (coconut milk rice) with ikan bilis (anchovies), nuts, a half egg and chicken.

Or two half-boiled eggs and two slices of toast. Or two butter and kaya (coconut jam) buns. Each selection comes with tea or coffee with refills.

It’s hard to find such a good deal these days. For RM2, you get a full-fledged meal that tastes surprisingly good, and look ma, there’s no mucking about in the kitchen, no washing up.

I guess for this price, many of us are prepared to tolerate their notoriously poor customer service. Grouchy staff who make you feel like you’ve dragged them out of bed to serve you breakfast.

Dirty trays and cutlery, not to mention cups and glasses with lipstick stains on them. Coffee machines that are perpetually out of order, causing frustration and unnecessarily long lines.

There are several signboards urging you to clear up your table after your meal because that’s what “allows us to keep the prices of our food down”.

Yeah right but how about ploughing back those savings into restaurant staff training, more thorough dish washing and coffee machine maintenance/upgrades?

At any rate, this is still a great deal to wake up to. But be warned, the lines can get very long. Breakfast starts at 9, so get there early. We left without eating the first time we were there because the lines were too long and our tummies were growling.
